In the 15th century, Chinese seamen drank green tea to prevent scurvy. Every year scientists are finding more and more health benefits in green tea. 15 to 20% of dried green tea is made up of catechins.

Catechins have very potent anti microbial actions and have been proven to lower cholesterol and inhibit the increase of blood pressure. In the dental field, loose green tea has been shown to suppress the process by which cariogenic bacteria create glucan, thus suppressing the formation of plaque on teeth and preventing cavities.

Green tea’s catechins have also been found to help inhibit cancer growth. The National Cancer Institute states, “[catechins] scavenge oxidants before cell injuries occur, reduce the incidence and size of chemically induced tumors, and inhibit the growth of tumor cells.” Since its discovery in China thousands of years ago, green tea has been curing countless people with a vast number of ailments. Today, green tea is also widely used as a healthy additive in natural foods and cosmetics.

Listed here are some of the many documented health benefits of green tea: 1) Helps prevent normal cells from turning cancerous 2) Slows the formation and growth of tumors 3) Heavy antioxidant content: lessens damage from free radicals that can cause cancer, heart disease, diabetes and aging 4) Enhances immune system function, helps control cholesterol levels and keeps blood sugar at moderate levels 5) Combats viruses and deadly food-borne bacteria 6) Promotes the growth of healthy bacteria in intestines 7) Kills bacteria in the mouth, lessening cavities and bad breath Enhances the body’s fluid balance and reduces stress – these are said to help slow the aging process. In addition, the catechins in green tea have been shown to increase metabolic rates, thus providing us with more energy and, in the same process, burning more calories. Green tea has therefore become a popular nutrition supplement and beverage for people looking for a natural weight management solution.

Women who are of child bearing age should begin taking a multivitamin regularly. This ensures that she is getting enough nutrients, especially folic acid. Folic acid can be found in multivitamins as well as in food. This is important because it can decrease the risk of neural tube, which later develops into the baby’s brain and spinal cord, defect such as spina bifida. Studies have shown that healthy women who start taking a multivitamin regularly before pregnancy also reduce the risk of preeclampsia, or toxemia. Toxemia is where the mother’s blood pressure shoots up to dangerous levels and could prove lethal to mother and baby.

The food we eat may not contain the proper amounts of vitamins and minerals our bodies need. A multivitamin will add those important nutrients to our diet. Taking a multivitamin before and through the first trimester of pregnancy will provide the mother and baby with proper nutrition and lessen the risk of malnutrition. Taking a multivitamin does not mean that you can eat a diet that is lacking the nutrients your body needs. Multivitamins are meant to supplement, and not the sole source of these nutrients. Although women need to eat plenty of healthy foods before and during pregnancy, once she is pregnant there are certain foods a woman should stay away from. Women should avoid soft, unpasteurized cheeses, unpasteurized milk, juices, and apple cider, foods containing raw eggs, raw or undercooked meats, fish containing high levels of mercury, and processed meats.

In addition to regularly taking a multivitamin, women should begin a weekly exercise routine. If your doctor says it is safe to do a low-impact exercise during pregnancy, it has been shown to be extremely beneficial. Exercise during pregnancy can prevent excess weight gain; reduce back pain, swelling and other pregnancy related problems; improve sleep; increase energy; and lessen recovery time. If you have an active lifestyle before pregnancy it is okay to continue, but with moderation. Most exercises are safe as long as you don’t overdo it. Safe exercises include swimming, walking, elliptical machines, and other low-impact exercises.

Even though you should drink more fluids while pregnant, women should stay away from caffeine and especially alcohol. Water is the best way to get enough fluids. Drinking more water is important. It helps flush out toxins in the body. It is recommended that women should drink at least one gallon of water a day. Water helps your body prepare for all the changes it is going through and alleviate and discomfort you may have. Studies have shown that if you drink more water, you will retain less water because you are properly hydrated. Drinking enough water helps protect the baby by keeping the amniotic sack wet. Adding to the list of benefits from drinking water is preventing premature birth and lessening morning sickness.
It is important for women to take care of their bodies before, during, and after they become pregnant.

Taking a multivitamin regularly before becoming pregnant will lessen their chances of delivering the baby prematurely. It will also lower the chances of malnutrition. Pregnancy is one of those times when the body needs water. It carries nutrients from you to the baby. Make sure you take the multivitamins, exercise and drink enough water for a happy and healthy baby.

Vegetarianism is a growing practice in the world today. Many choose to follow this path because of health, religion, taste, culture, or economy. In the traditional sense, being a vegetarian means refraining from eating meat and fish, though some vegetarian diets have expanded restrictions. This can be a great way to improve your diet because it calls for an increase in consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and requires you to monitor your food intake. Paying attention to what you eat and creating an accountability program for yourself is proven to help you eat healthier.

Anyone who embarks on a vegetarian diet should have some concerns about the nutrients they are missing out on. The main concern is usually for protein, and for good reason. Some other deficiencies can occur in iron, and the essential fatty acids (EFAs).

Proteins are chains of amino acids that work in the body at a cellular level to cause chemical reactions, signal cells, and create the structure of the body. When digested, protein also acts as a fuel. There are eight amino acids that are essential to have in a diet and only a few plant sources have them all. They include sources like lupin, hempseed, chia seed, quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth. Unfortunately most of these are not the common day to day food we stock in our fridges. Another option is having a combination of rice and beans. But again this can get old quickly especially if you have to eat it every day. A good solution to this problem is to add whey protein to your diet. Whey protein is usually in a sweet tasting, powder form that you can then make shakes from. This is a great way to get the protein you need and monitor your protein to see that you are getting enough. If you can rotate through a plant source, rice and beans, and whey, you will have a nice variety of protein in your diet.

Iron is another nutrient that your body might be missing out on if you are sticking to a vegetarian plan. One of iron’s main tasks in the body is to carry oxygen to all the cells. You become anemic when an iron deficiency occurs. This makes you feel tired, weak, and even mentally slower. Another sign is the inability for your body to maintain the needed body temperature. Long term, anemia can affect your organs since oxygen flow is restricted. Iron rich foods are common and it is just important that they are added to your diet. Some foods with iron include whole wheat bread, black beans, oatmeal, nuts, and tomato juice. If you are worried about your iron intake, a supplement or multivitamin is an easy way to get what you need.

Essential Fatty Acids are necessary to maintain the cardiovascular, reproductive, nervous, and immune systems. They basically take care of all of your cells by making cell membranes and allowing release of waste. Many Americans are already at risk for not having enough EFAs and vegetarians are in greater danger. EFAs mainly prevent future problems so you may not know you have a problem with EFAs intake until it is too late. Flaxseed oil is the best known source of EFAs though other foods (walnuts, seeds, avocado, and leafy green vegetables) contain them as well. It is very difficult to get all the EFAs you need from diet alone and so taking a supplement is usually recommended.

When you take care of your nutrition needs, vegetarianism is a great way to go. Vegetarians are generally healthier than most Americans because they actually pay attention to what they eat and care. Don’t forget to care about your protein, iron, and EFA’s as well.

For many years, people drank wine as one of their main forms of hydration. You find this in ancient times, as well as in past years. You also see drinking wine as very common place in several areas in the world – like France and other European countries. Wine is viewed as one of the main drinks of life, and many people enjoy partaking in it pretty much every day. White wine is produced when the flesh of red grapes is quickly pressed and the juice is not allowed to come in contact with the skin. Plant pigments called phenols present in grapes are responsible for giving red wine its red color.

The reason that this type of wine is beneficial to the body is due to the antioxidants that are found in the skins and seeds of red grapes (the primary ingredient in this wine). These antioxidants are called “flavonoids” and can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in several ways. Flavonoids reduce the production of “bad cholesterol” or “low density lipoprotein”, and increase production of “good cholesterol” or “high density lipoprotein”. Flavonoids also help to reduce blood clotting. Red wine is a truly amazing alcohol drink. Aside from the wonderful taste, you can enjoy its many health benefits. Now you ask me, is it good if we drink this kind of wine more? Basically the answer is No! Too much alcohol consumption is also bad for your health. It can cause liver damage and cancers.

Red wines are most often aged in wood barrels to provide a deeper, richer flavor, sometimes described as woody, while white wines are not stored in wood to maintain their usually cleaner, clear taste. There are also guidelines on the types of wine to drink with different types of food, but many find the guidelines are not all encompassing. Of all the alternative wine supplements, OPC Factor, is our pick for best wine alternative supplement. It contains all the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, herbs and enzymes that red wine has but also is a liquid which allows the buccal absorption of the resveratrol – just like the French have been taking advantage of for decades.

Resveratrol, the key ingredient, may help and prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce “bad” cholesterol and prevent blood clots. Scientific research into the potential heart-health benefits of resveratrol is currently being conducted. Everything in this world should be taken in moderation and red wine is not exempted with that rule. Phenols are chemical compounds that affect the mouthfeel (the wine’s physical and chemical interaction in the mouth) color and taste of wine. The color also depends on the kind of acids present in the wine.

This is Important News About Fish Oil and Cholesterol

Have you heard about the many health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids? If yes, then you’ve probably heard about the connection between fish oil and cholesterol.

Comprehensive medical studies have discovered that fish oil and cholesterol may be closely connected. According to studies, omega-3 intake, either through dietary supplement or through fish consumption, can help support healthy regular cholesterol levels. In fact, studies show that the DHA and EPA content of fish oil have the potential to decrease cholesterol levels by around 25% to 30%. These results are not typical or guaranteed of course, but many doctors say why not give this simple health food a try if it might be so good for your health?

Fish oil has very high levels of pure DHA and EPA. It is unlike plant-based sources of essential fatty acids that provide ALA, which, in turn, still require conversion into DHA and EPA. In fish, the DHA and EPA are already in the form that is ready to offer the nutritional benefits. This means that oil from fish is more easily absorbed and more quickly beneficial for the body than oil from plants, such as flax seed oil, etc.

It was also found that fish oil shows promise in helping support healthy triglyceride levels in the blood. This effect, however, is thought to be unique only to the Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. These fatty acids are called long-chain fatty acids, as opposed to shorter chain Omega-3 fatty acids found in plant oils such as flax seed oil. By helping to support healthy blood cholesterol levels, fish oil, along with proper diet and exercise, shows promise in being part of the lifestyle that might help some people avoid heart disease related health concerns.

Aside from that, fish and the oil from the fish may help support lower cholesterol by possibly helping reduce the bad cholesterol called LDL or low-density lipoprotein. At the same time, it is also thought to help stimulate production of HDL or high-density lipoprotein, which is called the good cholesterol.

So now that we know the fantastic news about fish oil and cholesterol, how exactly do you reap these benefits? Do you need to eat so much fish that you feel like a trained seal? What if you don’t particularly care for fish as your dinner meal?

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish can be consumed in two ways: either you eat a lot of fish or you take fish oil supplements. The recommended level is to consume a meal with at least 100 grams of oily fish two times in one week. However, many kinds of fish have mercury in them these days. There have been many medical authorities that warn us about the dangers of mercury in fish. Many people prefer to take a food supplement pill every day along with their vitamins. That way they can experience the benefits of fish on supporting healthy cholesterol levels by taking Omega-3 oil capsules.

However, the benefits will still depend on what type of fish supplement you use. Are there any supplements you can trust, that come from clean healthy fish in clean waters, and not from “mystery fish” caught in polluted waters? Be very careful here. The best type of supplements should be made from healthy deep-water fish that live in a clean marine environment, free from harmful contaminants such as mercury and other heavy metals. One of these rare types of fish can be found in the pristine waters off the coast of the sunny island of New Zealand in the South Pacific. The name of this fish that is so good is “the Hoki fish.”

The Hoki fish is used in the making of the one and only highly beneficial fish oil supplement that I use myself, which contains Omega-3 DHA Esters from only the cleanest fish. That ensures that you get fresh, pure, concentrated and active fish oil without any harmful contaminants. And to be even more certain, the family-owned company that makes it also uses an extensive molecular distillation process to purify the product even further.Be careful and compare products when choosing one for yourself and your family.

See a free video and report about the best pure fish oil. Why not have the kind that is a more pure and more concentrated, and has more DHA and EPA and more Omega-3 and more of everything you want from the supplement? That is the kind you want to know more about, the concentrated fish oil that I take myself after trying every kind I could find.

Feeding a dog should be taken with seriousness and a careful eye in reading ingredients and a strong backing of nutrient knowledge. Whatever food is given to the dog will later on manifest itself either through a healthy response of strength and energy or a downward turn of weakness and poor appearance. As people are concerned with what goes into their bodies, the same should carry to their pets. Probably the very basic rule of feeding a dog is “do not feed your dog something you would not eat yourself.” Although it must be kept in mind that not all human foods are good for dogs.

Scanning or going over the small print of ingredients on canned products may be helpful to a certain point but it would even be better to know what should go into a healthy meal. Experts have come to a consensus that the best ratio of food is 40% meats, 50% veggies and 10% carbohydrates or even grains. Meats found in canned goods have already been pre-cooked and contain the protein needed by dogs. One must take note of what brands are certified by the animal health ministry of what should or should not be in dog food. Some cheaper brands may throw chicken beaks into the mix which is considered to be indigestible. Cheaper foods are known to add fillers to give more weight and volume into the cans but these fillers may consist of other foods that dogs may be allergic to such as corn or wheat. Grains are much more preferred due to its optimum fiber content to meet the digestive needs. Again, careful reading of the ingredients is needed for the first items may be meats but if careless owners just toss it in the trolley, they missed the other items that are more fillers.

How about playing it safe and sticking with veggies since meats may even cost more? A sound idea however dogs need the animal protein to be healthy as well as to enjoy their food. Although a vegetarian diet is possible, dogs may not take to it as well as people do. When introducing new foods to the dog, it is a good move to see how it comes out later on. The feces of the dog should be firm not loose nor should it have blood or mucus.

Preservatives are present in canned foods but it would be wise to avoid chemicals such as BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin for they may give cancer. Overall, the one of the best advice is to opt for the known brands as well as consulting with the dog’s veterinarian for more additional information that a printed can or media can give.

People living in the Pacific Islands eat Noni fruit as a “famine fruit” or a regular staple. It contains many seeds that can be eaten more easily when cooked. The fruit is consumed both in raw form and after it has been cooked. The most nutritional part of the Noni fruit is located in the pulp as the fruit contains mostly Vitamin C. This entire little 6 cm fruit can yield the following: Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Potassium, Iron, Calcium, Niacin and Carbohydrates. Noni fruit also contains the following phytochemicals that offer many health benefits: fatty acids, alkaloids, lignans, polysaccharides, iridoids, flavanoids and more! So what do all of these wonderful nutrients do? We’ve learned about the benefits of many vitamins but equally important, if not vital, are phytochemicals. These are naturally occurring chemicals found in fruit and vegetables that can make a marked improvement on your health when consumed on a regular basis. Let’s look at just a few, starting with fatty acids. The words “fatty acids” would probably frighten people away who don’t know their benefits. Fatty acids help to distribute oxygen throughout your body through your blood stream. They are “cell food” because they work hard to repair damaged cells and add strength to your tissue and organs. Ladies, you know you would love to find the fountain of youth. Fatty acids are great for cell regeneration and work to fight the effects of aging. Want to lose a few pounds? Fatty acids help your body break down cholesterol and keep your thyroid functioning properly. They help to regulate blood pressure and strengthen your immune system! This ingredient alone is enough for me to run out and buy a bottle of Noni. As if fatty acids weren’t enough, you will also reap amazing health benefits from lignans. Lignans are currently being studied for their ability to fight cancer, more notably, breast and colon cancer. Most cancers grow in estrogen.

If there is already a decent amount of estrogen in the body, lignans replace the existing hormone and push it from the cells. This is one of the ways lignans may protect us against breast cancer and other cancers. Lignans can also be found in flaxseed, pumpkin seeds and cranberries. Some animal studies have already received favorable findings. These are just two of the many beneficial nutrients found in the Noni fruit. Imagine what a combination this is when it is attached to all of the other vitamins and phytochemicals! You can find organic Noni juice at your local health food store. Make sure that the label states that it is organic because it is slightly expensive and you don’t want to pay for a juice that has been diluted. Hold your breath each day as you gulp down an ounce of this powerful fruit juice. You will wake up with a spring in your step, clear and calm thoughts and energy! More importantly, you’ll be on your way to a healthier you!

Will the dog die from canine pancreatitis?
Can something be done to make sure it doesn’t appear?
If my dog has Canine Pancreatitis, how do I treat it?
For the first question, you should know that only the cases that get to severe stages can become fatal. The other two questions can be answered if you know how the Pancreas works and what it is.
The pancreas is an organ that is shaped in V and quite small, which sits near the duodenum and stomach. The duodenum is a small tube that will get the food to the intestine, from the stomach. The importance of the pancreas comes from the fact that it makes digestive enzymes, which are used to break down the food during the digestion process. From the pancreas, the enzymes are carried to the intestines.
The disease appears when those enzymes leak instead of getting to the intestines. The end result is an inflammation, which as it advances, so does the severity of the disease.
There are a number of causes which make this disease to appear. Below you can see some of the possible causes for Canine pancreatitis:
- a diet with too much fat
- obesity
- a disease of the liver
- traumas
- drug reactions
- giving the pet too many leftover that are fatty
Some of the symptoms that you can expect:
- decreased appetite
- abdomen that hurts
- greasy and yellow feces
- dehydration
- vomit
If the pancreatitis is acute, these are the symptoms that you can expect:
- body wide spread infection
- heart rhythm that is irregular
- organs get inflamed if they’re in the vicinity of the pancreas
Another side effect of acute pancreatitis is that the dog might get a disseminated intravascular coagulation. To put it simply, this happens when the white blood cells increase and the blood clots. When the blood begins to clot it can’t be reversed and it will kill the dog in most cases.
There are two main things you should do to treat him:
- giving him fluid therapy
- don’t give him water or food for 1-2 days
When the dog doesn’t get any water or food, the pancreas has the chance to stop the production of enzymes, so the inflammation isn’t stimulated anymore. After one or two days, you can start reintroducing the food, and it should consist of food that is easy to digest, with low protein and fat. If the dog is dehydrated, they can receive fluids intravenously, so they get their electrolyte and hydration balance.
If you have reason to suspect that your dog suffers from canine pancreatitis, you should visit a doctor immediately.

You are following a healthy diet and taking all the major food groups in your diet regularly; your way towards healthy living. But is that all? Are you sure you don’t require anything extra in your diet? Aren’t you missing something out? No? Think again.

There are numerous benefits found in some food groups that you are missing out daily. For example, do you have a regular intake of berries in your diet? Do wolfberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, grapes and pomegranate find their place in our daily diet? If your answer is no, then you are missing out a very important part of health. Berries are very rich in antioxidants, which build up your immune system, and you are less prone to seasonal diseases like common cold, flu and fever. Berries also have a high content of vitamin C, which is again a rich source of antioxidants. Dark berries have components called flavonoids that help prevent different types of cancers. Berries also inhibit the growth of Alzheimer’s disease in old people. Your regular diet cannot offer you all these benefits. Daily intake of all the berries is generally not possible, so health specialists suggest the intake of supplements.

If you are a bodybuilder, and want to achieve fast and quick results in building those muscles with ease, we have something for you too. If the word ‘steroids,’ came in your mind, think again. We’re not talking about steroids, but natural supplements of nitric oxide. These supplements will give you all the good effects of steroids minus the side effects. These supplements are smooth on your body, because they are all natural. Nitric oxide is actually produced in the body to regulate blood pressure, thereby avoiding risk of strokes and heart attacks. Supplements of nitric oxide increase the flow of blood in blood vessels, which lead to muscle tissues. Muscles get bigger due to high blood flow through them, and you are able to achieve harder muscles.

Another type of supplement that might have been ignored by you is omega 3 fatty acid. This nutrient is generally found in fish oil, but if you are a vegetarian, or allergic to fish, there are omega-3 supplements that are derived from flaxseed oils. These supplements help you fight the risk of heart diseases, and they also fight the chances of cancer. They also help in various other conditions like asthma, eczema, menstrual pains, stroke, and schizophrenia etc.

Be sure to include these supplements in your daily diet to keep diseases far way from you and lead a happy and healthy life.
