Viral meningitis is the most common form. Usually viruses that enter your body through your mouth before going to your brain and multiplying cause it. You can find these viruses in the mucus, saliva and feces. A viral infection headache can come from different types of viruses. The concern about having such headaches is that the root cause may be meningitis. Straight away the doctors put me in for a brain scan. As I waited for the results the doctors told me it was one of three things: viral meningitis; bacterial meningitis or a brain hemorrhage. Meningitis symptoms are typically characterized by bad headaches, stiff neck, tiredness, vomiting, fever , leg pain, dull skin tone and difficulty in consuming food and drinks. 1-Nausea and vomiting
2-Extreme sensitivity to light (photophobia)
3-Stiff neck
4-Head ache
5-Fever (may have sudden onset) The bacteria are highly toxic. They attack the nasal tract and invade the bloodstream. Their main target is the brain. When they reach the blood-brain barrier, they destroy the defence system, enter the CSF and attack the brain cells. As the infection spreads, the fluid becomes pus-like, with white blood cells, proteins and extra fluid all trying to fight the infection. Causes The bacteria and virus that cause general illness can also caused meningitis. Sometimes the bacteria and viruses that infect the skin, urinary system, gastrointestinal or respiratory tract can spread by the bloodstream to the meningitis through cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid that circulates in and around the spinal cord. The cerebrospinal fluid in bacterial meningitis is usually characterized by marked elevations in protein concentration, an very reduced glucose level, and, in the absence of previous antibiotic treatment, a positive Gram stain for bacteria. Viral meningitis is the most common form. Usually viruses that enter your body through your mouth before going to your brain and multiplying cause it. You can find these viruses in the mucus, saliva and feces. Other viruses that may cause meningitis include: Chickenpox , Flu, Mumps, HIV ,Genital herpes. Meningococcal meningitis is endemic in parts of Africa, India, and other developing nations. Bacterial meningitis is contagious, which means it can be passed to someone else by spit or snot. Symptoms in infants under 12 months include high fever, fretfulness, irritability – particularly when handled, difficulty awakening, drowsiness, difficulty feeding, and/or a stiff neck, or bulging fontanelle. Viral meningitis is caused by enteroviruses, as the name implies. Highly infectious, the disease is spread easily through secretions of the nose and mouth. Three to seven days is the incubation period of the virus, starting with the infection through to the appearance of the first symptoms. Different types of meningitis can be caused by many elements with a variety of symptoms, but one symptom that may or may not be present is that of meningitis rash. It is important to know what to watch for as this symptom could indicate the immediate need for treatment. The treatment that you will receive for meningitis depends on the underlying cause of the condition. If it is viral meningitis you will usually only require symptom relief such as bed rest and increased fluid. Bacterial meningitis requires prompt intravenous (IV) and antibiotic treatment. These will prevent serious complications as well as neurological damage. The next step in understanding these concepts is to analyze the first parts of the words. “Mening-” refers to the meninges which are the membranous coverings of the brain and spinal cord. So “meningitis” means inflammation or infection of these membranous coverings. Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. International travelers should discuss the danger as well as prevention and treatment of this disease before departure.

Meningitis is a viral. It’s means the cause is infection with a virus. Bacterial meningitis is quite rare but it can be very serious and needs urgent treatment with antibiotics. It is a inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord called the meninges. It is rarely occurs when an infection in the body spreads through the blood and into the cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid that cover the outside of the brain and spinal cord. The infection can spread into the brain tissue and cause brain damage.Meningitis mostly present in kids age 5 and younger, and in between16 to 25 year olds, but people can get meningitis at any stage of life.

Symptoms

Symptoms of meningitis, which may appear suddenly, often include high fever, severe and persistent headache, stiff neck, nause, and vomiting. Changes in behavior, such as confusion, sleepiness, and difficulty waking up, are important symptoms. In infants, symptoms of meningitis are often much less specific and may include irritability or tiredness, poor feeding, and fever.

Adult Meningitis Symptoms

About 25% of those who develop meningitis have symptoms that develop over 24 hours. The remainder generally become ill over one to seven days. Occasionally, if someone has been on antibiotics for another infection, the symptoms can take longer to develop or may be less intense. If someone is developing fungal meningitis (most commonly someone who is HIV positive), the symptoms may take weeks to develop.

Causes

Many of the bacteria and viruses that cause meningitis are fairly common and are typically associated with other routine illnesses. Bacteria and viruses that infect the skin, urinary system, gastrointestinal or respiratory tract can spread by the bloodstream to the meninges through cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid that circulates in and around the spinal cord.

The most common infectious causes of meningitis vary according to an individual’s age, habits, living environment, and health status. While nonbacterial types of meningitis are more common, bacterial meningitis is the more potentially life-threatening. Three bacterial agents are responsible for about 80% of all bacterial meningitis cases. These bacteria are Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis (causing meningococcal meningitis), and Streptococcus pneumoniae (causing pneumococcal meningitis).

How is meningitis diagnosed?

Early diagnosis and treatment are very important. If symptoms occur, the patient should see a doctor immediately. The diagnosis is usually made by growing bacteria from a sample of spinal fluid. The spinal fluid is obtained by performing a spinal tap, in which a needle is inserted into an area in the lower back where fluid in the spinal canal is readily accessible. Identification of the type of bacteria responsible is important for selection of correct antibiotics.

Treatment

If meningitis is suspected, medical advice should be sought immediately. Because some of the early symptoms might be similar to other conditions, a high level of suspicion is required, especially with children.

Prevention is better than cure! Effective vaccines are now available against some types of meningitis.

Acute bacterial meningitis requires prompt treatment with intravenous antibiotics to ensure recovery and reduce the risk of complications.

Pneumovax (also known as Prevenar) against Streptococcus pneumoniae is recommended for all people 65 years of age or older.

Drugs such as dexamethasone are sometimes given to reduce inflammation or to reduce the chance, or spread, of septicemia.

Dublin (PRWEB) August 22, 2006

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c40877) has announced the addition of Antiviral Therapeutics: Pipelines and Competitive Dynamics to their offering.

Antiviral Therapeutics: Pipelines and Competitive Dynamics assesses the compounds, the clinical data, the companies, and the market-shifting developments in the antiviral therapeutic category. Sales of antiviral agents currently constitute 25% of the anti-infective drug market. The ability of viruses to develop resistance against drugs, coupled with sub-optimal treatment outcomes as a result of failure of patients to comply with the full course of therapy, will continue to provide the commercial and medical incentive for intense R&D activity.

Until recently, much of the effort to develop new antiviral agents was directed toward improved agents for the treatment of HIV and Hepatitis C (HCV). While these indications continue to attract research dollars and to make measurable progress with respect to dosing, deliverability, and efficacy, several new developments have reignited interest in antiviral disease R&D. These include concern about the evolution of avian influenza into a lethal pandemic and recent approvals for vaccines against certain strains of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that are associated with high rates of cervical cancer.

Antiviral Therapeutics: Pipelines and Competitive Dynamics survey the 5 major viral disease categories and their sub-indications- HIV, Hepatitis, Herpes Viruses, Human Papilloma Viruses, and Respiratory Viruses.

For each indication, the report provides:

Pathophysiology, incidence and prevalence, symptoms and sequelae.

Assessment of current treatment options.

Assessment of unmet medical need.

Assessment of compounds in development (by agent and by mechanism of action).

Profiles of companies active in antiviral R&D

Indication-specific highlights from the study include:

HIV. 28 NCEs are in various stages of clinical development for HIV, and 5 will apply for regulatory approval through 2008. Agents in development include reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors, including fixed dose combinations, as well as new mechanistic approaches such as integrase inhibitors, fusion inhibitors, attachment inhibitors, maturation inhibitors, and replication and entry blockers.

HCV. Current HCV treatment, a combination of interferon and an antiviral agent, is lengthy, expensive, and effective in only 50% of patients because of poor compliance. Treatments in development are mostly oral agents, with 27 such drugs in various stages of early and mid stage human trials.

HPV. With the exception of a Phase II gel formulation analog of imiquimod, there is limited interest in HPV as a therapeutic target for the development of novel antivirals. However, the development of prophylactic vaccines is of considerable interest because of the high association of infection by certain HPV serotypes with the development of cervical cancer. The recent US approvals of Merck’s Gardasil, and the possible EU approval of GSK’s Cervarix in late 2006, are the first entries.

Individuals in R&D, business development, marketing, and strategy who need to stay on top of competitive developments in this fast-moving field will benefit from Antiviral Therapeutics: Pipelines and Competitive Dynamics.

Pneumonia is an infection of one or both lungs which is usually caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Prior to the discovery of antibiotics, one-third of all people who developed pneumonia subsequently died from the infection. Currently, over 3 million people develop pneumonia each year in the United States. Over a half a million of these people are admitted to a hospital for treatment. Although most of these people recover, approximately 5% will die from pneumonia. Pneumonia is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States.

Pneumonia Causes:

Some cases of pneumonia are contracted by inhaling disease-causing microbes that infect the lungs, causing inflammation and in-turn pneumonia. When an infected person sneezes or coughs, these microbes become airborne again and infect more people. And in few cases, pneumonia is caused when some mouth, throat or nose dwelling bacteria or virus enter the lungs, causing inflammation and infection. However, if a person suffers from another illness and has weakened immunity, a severe pneumonia can develop. People who have suffered viral infections recently, lung disease, heart disease, and swallowing problems and alcoholics, drug users and those who have suffered a stroke or seizure are at higher risk for developing pneumonia than the general population.

Pneumonia Symptoms and Signs:

Most people who develop pneumonia initially have symptoms of a cold (upper respiratory infection, for example, sneezing, sore throat, cough), which are then followed by a high fever (sometimes as high as 104 F), shaking chills, and a cough with sputum production. The sputum is usually discolored and sometimes bloody. Depending on the location of the infection, certain symptoms are more likely to develop. When the infection settles in the air passages, cough and sputum tend to predominate the symptoms. In some, the spongy tissue of the lungs that contain the air sacs is more involved. In this case, oxygenation can be impaired, along with stiffening of the lung, which results in shortness of breath. At times, the individual’s skin color may change and become dusky or purplish (a condition known as “cyanosis”) due to their blood being poorly oxygenated.

The only pain fibers in the lung are on the surface of the lung, in the area known as the pleura. Chest pain may develop if the outer aspects of the lung close to the pleura are involved. This pain is usually sharp and worsens when taking a deep breath and is known as pleuritic pain or pleurisy. In other cases of pneumonia, depending on the causative organism, there can be a slow onset of symptoms. A worsening cough, headaches, and muscle aches may be the only symptoms.

Children and babies who develop pneumonia often do not have any specific signs of a chest infection but develop a fever, appear quite ill, and can become lethargic. Elderly people may also have few symptoms with pneumonia.

Some of the Organisms that cause Pneumonia, and How are they Treated:

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is another form of pneumonia that usually involves both lungs. It is seen in patients with a compromised immune system, either from chemotherapy for cancer, HIV/AIDS, and those treated with TNF (tumor necrosis factor), such as for rheumatoid arthritis. Once diagnosed, it usually responds well to sulfa-containing antibiotics. Steroids are often additionally used in more severe cases.

Find powerful herbal remedies

Viral pneumonias do not typically respond to antibiotic treatment. These infections can be caused by adenoviruses, rhinovirus, influenza virus (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and parainfluenza virus (that also causes croup). These pneumonias usually resolve over time with the body’s immune system fighting off the infection. It is important to make sure that a bacterial pneumonia does not secondarily develop. If it does, then the bacterial pneumonia is treated with appropriate antibiotics. In some situations, antiviral therapy is helpful in treating these conditions.

Fungal infections that can lead to pneumonia include histoplasmosis, coccidiomycosis, blastomycosis, aspergillosis, and cryptococcosis. These are responsible for a relatively

        Symptoms of Pneumonia
Pneumonia is an infection of lungs. There are many different causes of Pneumonia. It is usually caused by bacteria, fungus, parasites or virus. It is very common disease which occurs at all age groups and is the leading cause of deaths.
It gets cured in about two to three weeks. It is more serious than Bronchitis. In some cases both pneumonia and bronchitis occur together and it is known as broncho-pneumonia. The most important symptom of this disease is shortness of breath.
Some causes of Pneumonia are fungal infection, irritant dust, irritation by worms, inhaling foreign material, infection, noxious gases or vapors. Apart from these other causes of pneumonia would be faulty eating habits and lifestyle.
This disease usually begins with an upper respiratory tract infection i.e. an infection of the nose and throat. However, the symptoms of pneumonia start after two or three days of cold or sore throat.
The risk factors of Pneumonia are described below:
If you have undergone a traumatic injury or surgery
Smoking or drinking alcohol
If you have some diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease or HIV/AIDS
This disease can also be acquired from hospital
Exposure to certain pollutants or chemicals
Symptoms of Pneumonia:
The general symptoms of Pneumonia are described below:
Shortness of breath
Nausea, vomiting, and muscle aches
Cough
Bluish or gray color of lips and fingernails in extreme cases
Rapid breathing and heartbeat
Chest pain
Loss of appetite
Abdominal pain
Decreased activity
Fever
History of untreated respiratory infection
The pneumonia symptoms in children are feeling of illness and fever along with lethargy. Other than these symptoms, this disease varies depending on the causes and some other factors.
The different types of Pneumonia and it symptoms are mentioned below:
The symptoms of bacterial pneumonia are coughing which eliminates green liquid, high fever, coldness accompanied with rapid heartbeat and shivers and skin turning blue
The symptoms of viral pneumonia are feeling tired and weak, dry cough and chest pain followed by headache and fever
The symptoms of Mycoplasmal pneumonia are feeling tired, fever, painful articulation, dry cough, and sore throat
People who are at a high risk of being affected by this disease are elderly people and children. Elders are mostly affected with pneumonia caused by bacteria or virus. People who are below the age group of forty are at high risk of being affected by Mycoplasmal Pneumonia.
This illness can also be prevented if you take some necessary simple steps such as stop smoking, washing your hands properly after you have come in contact with the person affected with this illness.
There are many different treatments that are available for Pneumonia. They can be either oral antibiotics or in case of severe cases provide oxygen and other supportive treatments. You can also opt for home treatments of pneumonia such as tea prepared from fenugreek seeds or applying a paste of ginger externally on the chest.
